9 Questions for a Prodigal Meat-Eater

This evening I met an old friend, Savannah Sanchez at Curbside Burger’s new location on Government St. We caught up and discussed some recent life changes…like how this five year pescatarian is now eating meat again. Only a week ago, I posted a status informing friends of my new venture with theburgerchick, and Ms. Sanchez replied with:

Dude, BJs brewhouse. HICORY. BRISKET. BACON. BURGER. Omg…

I took the suggestion in stride, for the first 22 hours that is. And then suddenly, it dawned on me. My pescatarian friend and former college roommate had not only recommended a burger, but a burger with three meats! I had to ask questions.

So, there we were sitting on Curbside Burger’s limestone patio listening to music and sharing a burger. The following interview ensued.

So, five years! What motivated you to become a pescatarian to begin with?

Health reasons and I love animals… All the reasons I guess most people do it. Watching all those documentaries on what people do to animals and the chemicals they put in food.

When did you decide to start eating meat again?

In August, right after the storm.

Related to the storm?

Yes and no. I had started thinking about it a few months prior to the storm. During the flood, we ran short on food, and I realized I really needed to get over some of my hangups…and the more I thought about it, I realized that my health had never really improved from not eating meat.

What kind of burgers do you like? 

Coming from a chef background, I like complex flavors. Funky or unconventional burgers, like BJ Brewhouse’s Hickory Brisket and Bacon Burger; but sometimes you just have to go with a classic.

Do you have a favorite place to get a burger?

Downtown Seafood. When I worked at Tsunami, we went there all the time.

What do you think about the burger here [at Curbside Burger]?

I love the spicy homemade pickles, and I thought it was good. But it wouldn’t be my favorite. Downtown Seafood has my heart…

Although, I do really like the buns here.

So, what do you do now?

I’m a librarian without the title.

Reading a lot these days?

Well, yes. I do like to read, but seeing as I work in the Children’s Library, it’s mostly children’s books I’m reading.

And on your own time?

Right now I’m reading “Quiet” by Susan Cain. And I just finished reading “Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (and Everything in Between) by Lauren Graham.”
